Guided Tours:
“Who’s who of the Habsburgs”
Guided tour “The Court Church”
Information: Angelika Schafferer Tel. + 43/512/594 89-111
Innsbruck’s Hofkirche or Court Church houses the greatest of all European imperial tombs:
the tomb of Emperor Maximilian I (1459–1519). The tomb is flanked by 28 larger-than-life bronze statues, which are known locally as the “Schwarzen Mander” (black men) and represent the Emperor’s relations and role models. Among others, Albrecht Dürer and Veit Stoß were involved in its design and execution. Marble reliefs by Alexander Colin, scenes depicting the life of Emperor Maximilian I, adorn the sarcophagus. Positioned in the gallery are bronze statuettes of the saints worshipped by the Habsburg family. The tomb itself, upon which Maximilian is shown kneeling, remains empty - the emperor was buried in Wiener Neustadt. Other sights worth seeing include the Ebert Organ (1558), the Silver Chapel and the final resting place of Tyrolean freedom fighter, Andreas Hofer.
